Session 1

Session 1: Highly efficient districts

Friday, 10 September 2021

This session is about the Passive House as a concept for settlements and neighborhoods. Its potential for climate protection and resilience will be presented and its user-friendliness will be illustrated by success stories of implemented projects. In particular, requirements related to historic preservation and renewable energy supply will be addressed in this context.

Passive Houses in 100 climate protection settlements in the sustainable energy state of North Rhine-Westphalia

Besides energy-related requirements, urban planning and architecture play an equally important role in the 100 Climate Protection Settlements project. 53 estates have already been completed. Once all the climate protection estates have been completed, 25,000 people will be leading climate-friendly lives in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Richard-van-de-Loo-Straße climate protection settlement in Kleve

Certified eco-home housing development of North Rhine-Westphalia. The housing development uses a community heating system. The choice of material underpins the approach of a consistent solution and maintains a sophisticated architectural design. The landscaping design combines private gardens with attractive, shared outdoor spaces.

Preservation order and Passive House: retrofitting the Art Nouveau Otto-Wagner-Areal district in Vienna

EnerPHit Plus refurbishment of listed buildings is achievable based on available building and building services technology. The feasibility analysis shows that comprehensive energy efficiency and supply with renewable energies are not in conflict with the preservation of historical monuments.

Energy-resilient climate protection settlement
The challenge in the use of renewable energy sources lies in bridging a small shortfall in demand during the course of the year in passive houses. This makes the use of storage systems necessary. With the help of exergetically optimised system planning, a resilient energy supply is possible.

Partner projects as “PER cooperation model” for Passive Houses

Partner projects should contribute to a reduction in global poverty. Due to the general openness of the PER generation certification, Passive Houses can serve as domestic projects that allow the construction of energy generation systems in the form of partner projects around the globe.
